So, I was having this problem where Adobe Reader 8 crashed in msvcr71.dll upon trying to launch said Adobe Reader.
Through some digging, I found out that the error is caused by having Adobe Reader’s “Display PDF in browser” setting set. However, if the application crashes, you can’t get into the application’s user interface to shut it off, and you get stuck in a “chicken-and-the-egg” scenario.
Quick Fix:
- Rename the msvcr71.dll file to something else
- Launch Adobe, hit Ctrl-K, go to “Internet”, and uncheck “Display PDF in browser”
- Close Adobe
- Rename the file back to msvcr71.dll
- Launch your properly working Adobe.
YAY!!
