Hey, not that this is completely relevant, but I found a site called OpenDNS.com and it really sped up my network performance (Helps if you have a large ISP who get's pounded with DNS requests) It also allowed me to monitor my network stats and also use some content filtering..........Maybe it's worth a try for you?

I have tried 8.10. It's slower on my hardware than both WindowsXP and Vista, especially the boot time. Sorry, but it is. I also don't like emulating the operating system to run my game, especially SimCity4, because the game is slow enough as it is. I'm not complaining, I'm stating my personal experience and opinion.

I have other reasons for not liking Linux for the desktop, primarily because the POSIX style filesystem is a mess, and I want my desktop computer to be a tool to be turned on, picked up and used without having to put any thought into it's use, but that's a personal preference kind of thing. I want challenge from my server. I don't want that from my desktop OS.

I will give your comment some thought and try out Ubuntu on my desktop again for like the 7th time, just because I DO like the challenge you put forth of Windows being slower. We shall see. I am going on vacation tomorrow, so it may be a while.

Ubuntu slower than Windows? You must be running an old version of Ubuntu then. And you can run SimCity 4 in WINE on Ubuntu perfectly. I'm a big fan of SimCity 4 aswell. That's why I have the Deluxe edition. Anyways... SimCity 4 Deluxe runs flawlessly in WINE, so I don't know what you're complaining about. I have to agree with you about the Ubuntu Web server thing. Too bad I don't have a spare computer at home.

King Sabri,

I know AVG is weak. I really don't need anti-virus software, because I make my living on removing viruses manually, so not only do I not get infected, I can remove the infection in about 15 minutes if I did. I only use AVG for the occasion time I need to scan a download from an odd source. AVG is free and I am cheap.

Vista is good, if your hardware is good. My hardware is good, Vista screams and it looks pretty. Don't get me wrong: I love linux, especially Ubuntu, however, it is not mature enough for my needs, runs slower than Windows on the same hardware, hardware support isn't as good as Windows and I don't want to have to run an emulator to run the applications I want. Oh, and did I mention I play SimCity 4, so that kinda requires real Windows to work well. Gotta love TechNet: several thousands of dollars worth of licenses for like $100. Nothing like getting 50 copies of Windows for less than a buck each. Anyways...

More on Ubuntu: I use Ubuntu as the server that runs Inanis.net, and as my in-house development server. When it comes to web-hosting on the cheap, Ubuntu does it better than anything else. Install the server disc, install XWindows, WordPress and MediaWiki, and in about 45 minutes, you have a fully functioning Web2.0 system.

AVG, Vista and Ubuntu all have their place, and that's where I have them.
