In an update to my previous post about this, I have some changes to the procedure. Follow the procedure below, but in the “service creation” point, you have to change the parameters on the pathname. After “airprint.exe”, replace the “-s” with the following:

-R _ipp._tcp,_universal -s

If you already have AirPrint installed, check make sure you use “sc.exe Delete Airprint” at an Administrator level command prompt (or power shell, I suppose) to remove the current entry, then follow the instructions again.

2. Do the stuff at this page, sans the iTunes stuff and change the pathname as described above.
3. Open the 2008 R2 firewall Control Panel
4. Right click on Bonjour Service, click Advanced tab, and check all three checkmarks (Domain, Public, Private)
5. Create a rule for the AirPrint.exe file from step 2 to match the Bonjour Service on step 4.
6. Print from your iPad
7. Profit.

I fixed it today. Sorry to anyone who may have been inconvenienced. wp_options table was broken.

One of the greatest innovators in American history. He changed the way we all work, play and perceive computers and consumer electronics. The man, with the help of his talented group of engineers and designers, created a multi-billion dollar industry. He had a vision and he didn’t give up until it was complete.

See ya Steve. I’ll make sure to fire up the Apple II every once in a while for you.

I’m thinking of burning it down and rebuilding it from scratch. Use WordPress “network” functionality and put all the Wiki pages into WordPress with a single codebase, then organize the sites by Categories instead of pages.

All old content? Sequestered into some place somewheres until I can fix it. Maybe.

About the museum: Now that I’m at the new place, I have much more room for equipment, and because it’s in the basement on a concrete floor I can acquire much heavier stuff without worrying about the house collapsing.

I’ve cleaned up the computer room/museum, too. Here’s what “clean” looks like. Trust me, it was a nightmare about 5 hours ago.

Yeah, still here. Been busy making a move and getting an upgrade to my Internet connection. What was once 8m/.5m is now 12m/1m, with 22m boost at the beginning.

It’s nice.

New blog theme. My i7 Theme is cool, but I wanted a change. I’m considering that project done and I’ll get finalized code out there sometime.

Here’s basically how it’s evolved:

• Wanted to watch TV Shows on iPad
• Installed StreamToMe/ServeToMe to do this
• Found that StreamToMe didn’t support .wtv files, so installed WTVWatcher to convert them automatically to .dvr-ms files
• Smiled gleefully as I was able to watch my shows!
• Found out StreamToMe can stream almost anything – set it up to stream entire video archive and music archive to iPad
• Smiled gleefully as I was able to experience ALL my media without having to transfer files to the iPad built in storage
• Found out StreamToMe can stream over the internet. Set that up, smiled gleefully, etc.
• Wanted to watch my DVD collection on iPad
• Installed HandBrake to transcode DVDs into h264 files that take up very little space and StreamToMe can stream out.
• Smiled gleefully, etc.
• Wanted to watch movies I didn’t have in my library.
• Subscribed to Netflix, smiled gleefully, etc.
• Upgraded from streaming account to disc account. Smiled gleefully, etc.
• Installed OpenDNS on my home network. Banged head on wall for a month before finding out Netflix+DD-WRT DNSMasq+OpenDNS = no streaming. Fixed it. Smiled gleefully, etc.
• Found out I was running out of hard drive space with TV Shows and stuff.
• Installed Lifextender to auto-remove commercials. Smiled gleefully, etc.
• Used HandBrake to transcode commercial free .dvr-ms files into .m4v x264 files – sometimes getting files that were less than 10% of the original size.
• Smiled gleefully, etc.
• Wrote a ‘blog post about it.

This has been totally super cool. Recorded TV, without commercials, less than half the original size with the same quality and streamable over the internet to my iPad wherever I am. FREAKING ROCK.

I won’t go into any details here, but I will answer questions in the comments if you have any.

Have an iPad? On a WiFi Network? Using DD-WRT? Trying to stream Netflix and it won’t stream? It’s a DNS compatibility issue!

If you try to play Netflix titles or movies on your iPad and you have a problem where clicking on play brings you to “Preparing to view…”, the navigation bar sides down, shows you the Netflix app splash screen then instantly redirects you to the original page you were on, it’s an issue with DNSMasq in DD-WRT.

Solution: either disable DNSMasq on your DD-WRT based router, or manually code your ISP’s DNS server into your iPad WiFi settings. Even better: hard code OpenDNS or Google DNS into there (208.67.222.222 and 8.8.8.8 respectively).

It took me a month of hunting to find the solution to this. I’m reblogging the solution because the blog where I found the solution has a horrible PageRank, Inanis.net has an awesome PageRank, and maybe this will help others find the solution faster.
