Printing to Windows Printers from iOS 5

When Apple released iOS 5, some change they made to it made most of the previous instructions on the Internet to allow one to print from these devices to Windows non-AirPrint printers no longer work.

In an update to my previous post about this, I have some changes to the procedure. Follow the procedure below, but in the “service creation” point, you have to change the parameters on the pathname. After “airprint.exe”, replace the “-s” with the following:

-R _ipp._tcp,_universal -s

If you already have AirPrint installed, check make sure you use “sc.exe Delete Airprint” at an Administrator level command prompt (or power shell, I suppose) to remove the current entry, then follow the instructions again.

Install the app from this page
Do the stuff at this page, sans the iTunes stuff and change the pathname as described above.
Open the 2008 R2 firewall Control Panel
Right click on Bonjour Service, click Advanced tab, and check all three checkmarks (Domain, Public, Private)
Create a rule for the AirPrint.exe file from step 2 to match the Bonjour Service on step 4.
Print from your iPad
Profit.

New hardware and cleaning

I have acquired a Commodore 64. No, an old one. A breadbox. Complete with a whole bunch of stuff, software, printers, accessories, etc.. I might add it to the computer museum page at some point, but I just don’t really have the attention span to do that. It works, kinda. Power supply is wonky. Going to build a custom supply out of two wall warts and some determination, then we’ll see how well it works.

About the museum: Now that I’m at the new place, I have much more room for equipment, and because it’s in the basement on a concrete floor I can acquire much heavier stuff without worrying about the house collapsing.

I’ve cleaned up the computer room/museum, too. Here’s what “clean” looks like. Trust me, it was a nightmare about 5 hours ago.

This is what it looks like, August 2011, in "tidy" mode. You don't want to know what "messy" mode is.

Yeah, still here. Been busy making a move and getting an upgrade to my Internet connection. What was once 8m/.5m is now 12m/1m, with 22m boost at the beginning.

It’s nice.

New blog theme. My i7 Theme is cool, but I wanted a change. I’m considering that project done and I’ll get finalized code out there sometime.

I’ll be back round later to make sure the website hasn’t burned down. HA!

Adventures in Video

I’ve been working a bit with video transcoding and editing lately. It all started when I got an iPad in November. I wanted to watch my Windows 7 Media Center recorded TV Shows on the iPad in a different room. It has since blown up into a part-time hobby.

Here’s basically how it’s evolved:

Wanted to watch TV Shows on iPad
Installed StreamToMe/ServeToMe to do this
Found that StreamToMe didn’t support .wtv files, so installed WTVWatcher to convert them automatically to .dvr-ms files
Smiled gleefully as I was able to watch my shows!
Found out StreamToMe can stream almost anything – set it up to stream entire video archive and music archive to iPad
Smiled gleefully as I was able to experience ALL my media without having to transfer files to the iPad built in storage
Found out StreamToMe can stream over the internet. Set that up, smiled gleefully, etc.
Wanted to watch my DVD collection on iPad
Installed HandBrake to transcode DVDs into h264 files that take up very little space and StreamToMe can stream out.
Smiled gleefully, etc.
Wanted to watch movies I didn’t have in my library.
Subscribed to Netflix, smiled gleefully, etc.
Upgraded from streaming account to disc account. Smiled gleefully, etc.
Installed OpenDNS on my home network. Banged head on wall for a month before finding out Netflix+DD-WRT DNSMasq+OpenDNS = no streaming. Fixed it. Smiled gleefully, etc.
Found out I was running out of hard drive space with TV Shows and stuff.
Installed Lifextender to auto-remove commercials. Smiled gleefully, etc.
Used HandBrake to transcode commercial free .dvr-ms files into .m4v x264 files – sometimes getting files that were less than 10% of the original size.
Smiled gleefully, etc.
Wrote a ‘blog post about it.

This has been totally super cool. Recorded TV, without commercials, less than half the original size with the same quality and streamable over the internet to my iPad wherever I am. FREAKING ROCK.

This will most likely be the last Beta. I can’t think of anything else to tweak or add. Please, download this, test it out and let me know how it works on your live blogs. If this version is good, I’ll rip out the “Theme Version” widget, skip RC and go straight to RTW.

New Name: changed name from Inanis Seven to i7 to comply with WordPress theme name requirements.
Lots of engine changes: all for compliance with new WordPress theme requirements and guidelines.
CSS and HTML validation fixes
some more theming fixes and cleanup
added a new filter to finally, once and for all, fix “float” issues with embedded video. (All the code samples on the net tried to be smart and efficient, but broke on implementation. Funny how a simple old school string replacement can fix things where regular expressions cant. Simpler is better!)
Full testing on IE7, IE8, IE9 Beta, Chrome 9, FF3, Opera 10 on multiple operating systems.
Probably a whole bunch of other minor tweaks I’m not aware of.

Inanis Seven 0.9.5.7 Update

No download this time, too lazy to make one. Besides, there aren’t any feature updates or bug fixes here that are worth the extra build. However, there are a couple things of note:

New widget: theme version widget. It displays the vital stats of the currently installed theme. I created this so I can just upload new versions of the theme to the Sandbox without having to update the widget in the upper right corner. This will get pulled from Inanis Seven proper and be available as a separate download, probably.

Styling updates: fixed some styling inconsistencies, and added styling where there wasn’t any, but should have been. Also fixed some glaring bugs with multi-page controls and IE7 issues.

Attachment pages bug fix: when you created a page with attachments (think gallery), and clicked on the attachment, when WP sent you to the attachment page, the page would bomb. Faulty code in the breadcrumb dumper caused this.

Functions.php line 7 bug: some people were reporting functions.php on line 7 sending headers a second time. Nothing in there should have caused this, but just in case, I removed whitespace and other things that might print to screen and cause this. It never caused any problem on inanis.net, sandbox.inanis.net, or either of my VMWare devel servers. Odd.

SysTray general widgets: added some code to create a mouse hover tooltip based on the title of the widget to which the button belongs. Now, when you have widgets down there, you can tell what they are before clicking on them.

Other fixes: I’m sure there were other fixes… but I can’t think of them right now!

I’ll do some more refinement to ready this thing for launch and have 0.9.5.8 up for download in a couple of days. Maybe tomorrow – who knows!

Inanis Seven Beta 0.9.5.5 Update

Just a quick couple of updates to fix some minor things with IE older than version 9 and add a really small feature to the SysTray widget functionality.
