Inanis Glass Wordpress Theme

Inanis Glass WordPress Theme

This is the WordPress theme used for this website. Compatible with WordPress 2.6. (2.7 compatibility coming soon!)

Download

  • Next Version: 1.3 - maybe?
  • Current Version: v1.2
    • [download]- from MegaUpload
    • (not yet available from WordPress)
    • Bug fixes and feature additions. See readme for details.
  • Old Versions
    • v1.1.01 - Fix for multiple bugs. [download]
    • v1.1 - Bugfix and feature update. CAUTION: may break WordPress running on PHP4 based systems.
    • v1.0.01 - Initial Release

Expected Fixes/Changes in Next Version (1.3?):

[TBA]: Feature To Be Added | [BUG]: Code Failure | [OPT]: Optimization Needed

  • [FIXED] - Logout button does not work in WordPress 2.7 (now checks for version and gives right logout button)
  • [FIXED] - Check IFrame positioning for Firefox2/Win - Seems Okay.
  • [FIXED] - Sidebar reported not to work in FF 3.1 - Broken Graphic
  • [FIXED] - WP2.7 only - using $MenuOption = 2 doesn’t work correctly on the home page: the taskbar is empty.  It does, however, work on archive pages.
  • [ADDED] - Make Clock 24hr time compatible via option
  • [Work In Progress] - Multiple Language Support (unlikely, but technologically possible)
  • [WORDPRESS BUG] - WP2.7 - manually embedded flash does not hover over taskbar, but flash embedded using media embedder doesn’t work : I have found some issues with WordPress, both 2.6 and 2.7. If you take a manually embedded flash object and try to center it using the built in WYSIWYG editor, switch to visual mode, then switch back to HTML mode, it will accidentally cut off the trailing </p> tag that ends the centering function, causing layout weirdness. I believe this is a problem in the TinyMCE editor that WordPress uses.  Also, the other issue of using the media embedder - uh, I can’t figure out how to embed flash directly using that - seems to be internal or external link or image style references only, so if someone else knows something I don’t, please let me know.
  • [WEIRD BUG] - Comments Feeds are blank in -some- WordPress 2.7 installations - Have tested this on 2.7’s Kubric with all plugins unloaded after upgrading - I get a big blank nothing on my development server, but it works on Inanis.net. I believe this is an issue with a botched upgrade or a web server platform issue.
  • [WORDPRESS BUG] - Certain widgets don’t seem to work in WP 2.7. I was unable to recreate this. However, it is said that to fix this, go back to the theme you had before Inanis Glass and remove your “broken” widgets, activate Inanis Glass, and re-add the widgets.
  • [TBA?] - Check comments features for 2.7 - http://weblogtoolscollection.com/archives/2008/11/04/are-your-theme%E2%80%99s-comments-wordpress-27-compatible/  -   http://codex.wordpress.org/Migrating_Plugins_and_Themes_to_2.7
  • [TBA?] - Allow variable width Task Bar buttons (for those pages/cats too big to fit in the button)
  • [TBA?] - Create a dynamic swapout option for the start menu menus. (menu 1 and 2 are called by function, and contents of each menu are determined by useroptions.php)
  • [TBA?] - Allow for options to be set in the Admin/Dashboard instead of via useroptions.php.

About the Design and Features

I wanted a Glass-style theme for my website. I couldn’t find one I liked, so I made one.

  • Striking Glass-style design

    • Drop Shadows
    • Transparency
    • Taskbar-style pages list
    • Glowing Options Orb
  • Seven user selectable sub-themes

    • Void, Life, Earth, Wind, Water, Fire and Lightweight

    • Cookie saves user’s preference for 30 days
    • Default Theme is admin selectable. (see Readme below).]
  • Easy Navigation

    • “Taskbar Preview” style menus when you hover over page buttons - makes finding pages a snap!
  • Cross Browser Functionality

    • IE6, IE7, FF2/3, Safari 1-3, Chrome

    • NOTE: IE6 Functionality is just that, functional. It doesn’t look pretty and at least one issue causes the screen to want to “scroll forever”, however it is visible and usable. These issues may be corrected in a future release.
  • Widget Ready

    • Think: Sidebar “Gadgets”

    • Themed Widgets: Each widget is graphically themed in an attractive way.
  • Convenient Options Menu

    • Meta functions neatly tucked away. Makes sure your content is front and center.

    • New Post and New Page buttons right on the Options menu – saves time!
  • Customizable user picture

    • Uses the “Custom Image Header” feature of WordPress to allow the blog owner to change the user picture to his/her heart’s content.

  • Gravatar-enabled.

    • Subscribers see themselves on the Options Menu and in posts.

  • Minutiae

    • Graphic work was done in Paint Shop Pro 8. I know it’s crufty and old, but Adobe software just costs too damn much.

    • It looks best if you have the Segoe UI font installed, but works with number of other default Windows, Mac and Linux fonts, so it should look okay in any situation.

Tips and Tricks

Very nice theme but unfortunately, there’s few errors on this theme. From what I understand that, none of any theme are that perfect.

    Here the errors are:

1.) When there are YouTube Video or any kind of video clip on that, the video clip hoovers over the black taskbar on the bottom instead of behind the black taskbar.

2.) There’s five errors and huge loads of warnings on this theme when it comes to W3C CSS Validator.

    3.) Not XHTML Validator.

I am sorry about that. I hope you can do something with that.

Was wondering if you could tell me under which template, under the theme editor, I should be looking at to edit how big the main “window” is so that I can adjust it to whatever size I need to. I am trying to iframe a 1024×768 site, however, I cannot find where to edit the php to suit my needs. I attached the webpage that I am more specifically talking about.

    Brad,
If you are talking about the box that has the translucent frame that holds things like posts and such, then an easy solution is out of reach.

Those are html DIV tags with a static width, because the graphic behind them is a static width: you are 320 pixels too short. Now, if you have any experience with graphic editors, you can do two things:
    1) hack the background graphics to be the width you want (there’s about 40 of them - 7 for each of the graphic themes).
    2) edit the style sheets to increase the size of the “windows” to match your graphics (#colwrap, .postcont, .PTtop, .PTbtm, .PTbar, .PFtop, .PFpst, .PFbtm, .p1, and probably others)

Sorry to say it, but because of how complicated the theme is already, making the “windows” have a fluid width is not something in my plans. It’s honestly too much of a pain in the butt - right now. I may do this later, but development on it is winding down and I don’t see it happening. Feel free, however, to hack to your delight!

Mike, thanks! Took a look at your page and your theme is pretty slick too. I used BlogEngine for a while, but I didn’t like my host and I didn’t want to spend exorbitant amounts of cash on a Server License just to host my website, so I went the Linux/WordPress route instead.

    Anyways, Good work!

    LeviathanC,

    To address your concerns:
I got another person who said that YouTube videos hover over the taskbar, however, I cannot get any of my browsers on any of my computers to do it. Can you tell me what browser you are using so I can see if I can fix it.

As of the last version, the code DID validate CSS before I uploaded it… but level 3. You are probably validating it as level 2. I am not worried about the so-called “warnings”, because they do not affect the viewing of the page in any way. I might clean them up, but I probably won’t.

As of the last version, the code DID validate XHTML, without any sidebar widgets turned on, before I uploaded it. Anything coming back as invalid are custom hacks made after the theme has loaded, like sidebar widgets. If you were validating my site directly, the errors you were getting were from the imbedded custom Javascript showing the random quotes at the top of the page.

    inanis,

From what I have seen that YouTube did hover over the taskbar on Firefox 3.0.4, Internet Explorer 7.0.6001.1800, SlimBrowser 4.11, Opera 9.62 and Avant 11.7.

It’s working almost fine on SeaMonkey and Flock 1.2.6 and K-Meleon 1.5.1 but there are a white box hovers over YouTube Videos when getting close to the taskbar.

I see that the taskbar found on the bottom of the page which won’t move while scrolling up and down on Safari 3.2 and Google Chrome 0.3.154.9.

    7:42 pm - November 17th, 2008

@Homer: Thanks for the kudos. I thought about this when I designed the theme. Do I make the header easily changable, or the photo?

I went with the photo, because that is more “Vista” like. You can change the little icon up there, but you have to do it the old fashoned way. You can either replace the “blogicon.png” file in the theme with your own picture, or you can edit “header.php” to point to the graphic you want. The graphic can be any size you want, -I think-. The little translucent bubble it is in should stretch however you want it.

Spockers knows how to get around the WordPress theme approval system. Kudos on the URL legerdemain dude! However, because since I don’t know if the folks at WordPress are aware of this vulnerability, I suggest you don’t post how to do it again… at least not here anyways.

I’m just a regular Joe here and I don’t want to get in trouble. I can’t afford it!

But seriously, I am impressed by the “social engineering” URL trick.

Inanis, yea I got my little pic posted :) That’s an awesome tool! Also I was reading some of the comments here, I don’t know but I think one of them asked about little windows when hovering over the tabs below?

Anywho, great job! And keep up the great work, I know how stressful it might have been to bring up a true Vista look without the glitches of really having Vista :) Thanks again for the awesome theme!

  26. inanis said...
    8:58 pm - November 17th, 2008

Yes, version 1.1 has little hovery things when you hover the mouse over the buttons at the bottom, but only if you have more than just the “home” button. (Meaning you have “pages” set up in the admin area).

    Thanks again!

  27. Homer said...
    9:01 pm - November 17th, 2008

Yeah I just noticed that… WOW!!! Ok now one last question… How would I make a “child page”? I hover over my little tabbies on the bottom and see “No Child Pages…”

  28. inanis said...
    9:17 pm - November 17th, 2008

Yeah, thats a complaint someone else made that lead me to add a feature in upcoming v1.2 that allows you to shut those off. If you want to have “child” pages, just create a new page that has one of “top level” pages set as it’s parent. For example, create a new page called whatever you want, and look below where you type up the page and there should be an option called “Page Parent”. Just pick one of the pages that represents your button, and it should pop into the hoverer thingie.

If you don’t like the hovery thingies, let me know and I can see about advancing you a copy of v1.2 - but beware - its got bugs.

Great! Thanks! As for the 1.2, I’ll just wait for the full version theme. I don’t have a test site running and I’m already risking it big time running my site on 2.7 Beta 3. But thanks help. :)

    12:30 pm - November 18th, 2008

Hi there! I love your theme! I’m currently using it for my blog. I hope you don’t mind that I edited it a little here and there; the disclaimer box is gone and I have your site in a text link instead of with the logo.

About the theme, is it possible to choose the pages that you want displayed on the taskbar? By default, all pages (I have over 30 top level pages) are listed and the clock ends up disappearing off the side. I’ve since edited the template to manually list only the pages I want, but that way I lose the child-page pop ups =(.

Or otherwise, is it possible to have the pages listed on the start menu just like the categories? I’m thinking it’s probably a slight modification in the footer.php file but I can’t code php =(. I wouldn’t mind swapping out the tag cloud for Pages since I don’t use tags at all.

I’m sorry if I sound like I’m asking too much, I just thought maybe I could suggest these and see what you think about them =).

  31. Axeile said...
    12:36 pm - November 18th, 2008

Oh, just to add on about the pages, Wordpress’s Pages widget lets you customize which pages you don’t want displayed by entering in the page IDs to be hidden. Maybe for the “pages in start menu” thing, something could be done to hide the hidden pages as well. What do you think?

  32. inanis said...
    9:36 pm - November 18th, 2008

    Axeile,

Thanks for the kudos. You can edit the theme as much as you like. It’s open source GPL, so have fun.

Being able to choose the pages on the taskbar would require me to get into plugin/widget type coding, which I am not certain I could do. I can, however, consider creating a function and selectable option that will “cap” the number of buttons to a certain number, and then create a little button at the right you can click on to show the other page buttons that won’t fit. That seems easy enough to do.

It is technologically possible to show the pages on the “options menu” instead of the categories, but that’s not as easy as the buttons thing. The “options menu” has several layers that are interconnected in a fragile manner with JavaScript. I am thinking of a way it can be done as I write this and I will keep it in mind.

I will put these on my “to-do-list” for version 1.2, but I can’t make any promises.

I have a “about” page marked “no comment” and I got the “Sorry, but comments are now closed. Check out another post and speak up!” message but I also got (above the previous message) the “Leave A Comment …” form.

  38. inanis said...

    Crusty,
This is fixed in v1.2. I should be done with v1.2 in a week or two.

The upside to that bug is that any comment on a closed page/post someone tries to post won’t post, because WordPress won’t let it, so its really a display bug and not any sort of vulnerability.

    Jukka,

Have you tried installing Inanis Glass v1.2? I see you are running 1.1 or earlier….

From what I can tell, Shadowbox uses a window.onload function that version 1.1 of Inanis Glass also uses. Only one window.onload can be used at a time unless you use some magic. I am going to make a guess that because of this, either Inanis Glass breaks or Shadowbox breaks. Inanis Glass 1.2 uses a different manner of loading its Javascript functions that shouldn’t interfere with other scripts using window.onload. Try it and see what happens, then let me know…

Try installing Inanis Glass 1.2 and see if that fixes the problem.

Uhhh, weird. Not sure what the implications of that would be. If it works as is, then is there a reason to change it? Is having font-family in * a CSS-faux-pas, because I’ll be the first to tell you I don’t always follow convention.

    Dear Inanis,

    Great theme, I like it.

But as you know, “RSS Feed for comments” does not work, how can I fix it?

It looks like the feed work, here, on your site.

    Thank you,
    Andy

    Hi. Happy new year! :-)
I gotta say this is a fantastic theme. Thank you.
One question: Is there any way to add more characters to the QuickLaunch buttons?

    Thanks in advance.

    Andy…
This is an issue with WordPress 2.7. The theme works in 2.6, but not 2.7 for this feature. I did some research and the WordPress API for this function has not changed for 2.7 - it just doesn’t work right. I even started up a WordPress.com blog to see if it works there - and it does. But then checked out the theme used on that blog and the API code is the same. WordPress MU 2.7 must not have this issue.

I then took my development server (running 2.7) and switched it back to the default Kubric that comes with 2.7. The RSS feed was blank there too, so it’s DEFINITELY not the theme.

Essentially, as far as I can tell, there isn’t anything for me to change in Inanis Glass that will make it work.

Anyone who knows better, please tell me the secret so I can fix it!

Also, to change the theme backgrounds (if I understand correctly), you need to replace the JPG images used for each sub-theme.

    Dubya…
This is done via useroptions.php. Open it up and look through it. You will see what I’m talking about.

    Thanks for the quick reply.
Yes, but can the 2 character/19px width be extended? I have several links I’d like to put there but they really need 3 characters to make any sense.
