Book Nostalgia…

Anyone out there who is around my age (late 20′s) ever read a book called Lake Fear by Ian McMahan? I read that when I was in 3rd or 4th grade, and I loved it.

It was about a boy who stumbled across an artificial intelligence in a computer system named ALEC, and befriended it. They solved mysteries together. It sounds dorky now, but for a 9 year old who is into computers, its the coolest thing ever. It helped spark my imagination into what was possible with computers, deepened my interest into them even more, and inspired parts of my Lego universe.

I picked up the book at a local library a few days ago. I sat down to read it tonight and finished it in a flash. It took me a week when I was in school! I have to say, it’s been one of the most fond trips down memory lane I’ve had in a while.

Legions of Power

When I was about 6 or 7, I had these weird toys. They were interlocking war machines of some kind. I loved the things, mostly because they allowed me to build all manner of odd looking devices. I made hand weapons, space ships, stations and all kinds of stuff with them. 20 years later, I remembered vividly the toys, but not the name. I went looking for them, but without the name it’s been difficult. I searched google images trying to find a picture of the things, but to no avail.

Finally, I found a site that had text descriptions of over 1000 toys from the 80′s and through that description, I figured out what the toys were. They were called Legions of Power.

There were red and blue sets with interchangable pods and items. Glow in the dark pieces too. It was my favorite thing before Lego.

Fraggle Rock… Rocks.

Recently, I came across a cache of Fraggle Rock episodes. I watched a few and I remember how much I loved them as a kid. I never got to watch them at home, as we didn’t have cable, but I saw them on the weekends at the babysitter’s house. I absolutely loved them then, and I’m falling in love with them again. Who woulda’ thunk that a geek would like some ancient muppets show. Go figure.
