Internet, out of thin air.
Net stumbling, also known as war driving, is a pastime of mine.
REMEMBER: the unauthorized use of another’s network, no matter what the reason, is illegal in the United States and probably other places too. DON’T DO IT! I certainly dont!
What’s Net Stumbling?
With a notebook computer, a cheap GPS receiver, a cheap USB WiFi receiver, NetStumbler software, GPSVisualizer.com, Google Earth and gobs of free time, one can pin-point the location of just about any open or encrypted WiFi network.
About My Stumbling Adventures
What astonishes me, is the sheer number of unencrypted Wireless LANs there are in my area. Hackers would love this stuff. I hope to use this information to inform the locals of my community just how insecure their wireless networks really are. For those of you in the Knox County, Ohio area, there are plenty publicly open WiFi networks. These include:
- Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County
- Fredericktown Community Library
- Danville Public Library
- Sips Coffeehouse, Mount Vernon
- Comfort Inn, Mount Vernon
- Super8 Motel, Mount Vernon
- Holiday Inn, Mount Vernon
Stop in one sometime, get permission to use their network, then enjoy!
Oooh, Mappies!
Below are a few Google Earth KMZ plots from my net stumbling logs, for your viewing pleasure.
- Mount Vernon, OH [Google Earth KMZ]
- Mount Vernon to Westerville, OH [Google Earth KMZ]
- Westerville, OH [Google Earth KMZ]
- Fredericktown, OH [Google Earth KMZ]
Stumbling Requests
I can, upon request, net stumble any area within a 50 mile radius of Public Square in Mount Vernon. I reserve the right to refuse any request.
REMEMBER: the unauthorized use of another’s network, no matter what the reason, is illegal in the United States and probably other places too. DON’T DO IT!
