XP On Life Support

I was bored. I had old hardware. I had Windows XP. I put Windows XP on life support.

Imagine dragging a semi trailer with a Yugo.

Specs:

  • Intel Pentium Pro Processor @ 200Mhz
  • 32MB 72-Pin SIMM Memory
  • 2 GB Hard Drive
  • CD-ROM and Floppy
  • Windows XP Professional

Goals:

  1. Get it to boot Windows XP on the least amount of hardware I could find.

Results:

  1. The system was “inherited” from an old client.
  2. The system has a dual boot of Windows 98 and Windows XP, with 98 on C: and XP on D:
  3. I HEAVILY optimized Windows XP by using MSConfig and Services.msc to kill unnecessary startup items and services.
  4. It works. It’s very slow. YAY!
  5. I tried quantities of RAM at 8MB and 16MB, but the OS would not load. It stopped at the first white progress bar.
